Updates for Week of October 2, 2023

You did it!  Your effort, attitude, dedication, grit, professionalism, integrity and awesomeness brought you to the end of Quarter 1!  The faculty and staff of Ho‘okele is truly the greatest and we are so grateful to each of you for what you bring to our school community.  Come join us in the library at Faculty Meeting time for an End of the Quarter treat.  THANK YOU!

From Mr. Rankie:

Faculty Meeting -

As a Thank You! for all you have done this quarter we will be hosting a Grab - And - Go food pickup in lieu of our faculty meeting. Please use this time to prepare for your Parent - Teacher conferences and to input your grades into Infinite Campus. More information will be shared next week.

Ho‘okele Elementary Sideline Store -

Our Ho‘okele Elementary School Sideline Store has officially opened! For a limited time you can save 25% on all orders with the coupon code of SPIRIT. Please take a look at the attached banner for more details.

Our families will also be receiving this information in the next few days. It was previously shared with our staff that our uniform policy will remain the same, however after further discussion we will be adjusting our Wednesday Dress Code to allow for "Ho‘okele School Spirit Wednesday". Students will be permitted to wear shirts which were provided by the school (songfest, clubs, grade level, etc.), shirts purchased through the Sideline Store, or their school uniform. This will go into effect after Fall Break.

North Parking Lot -

We recently opened additional grass parking spots in our North Parking Lot. As this helps with our staff parking as well as our families and visitors to campus, we have secured a contract to extend this parking lot with asphalt. Optimistically the additional 30 parking stalls will be created over the Fall Break and be accessible upon the first week back.

In addition, we will be re-striping all parking lots on campus. All stalls will either be labeled as "STAFF" or "VISITOR", including the additional 30 stalls. As such, there will be no reserved stalls for any staff members on campus.

Kunehi Street and Kapolei Parkway Intersection -

Regrettably there was an accident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Kapolei Parkway and Kunehi Street. Thankfully the pedestrian, our former student, was able to walk away with only minor injuries. However, I ask that we all remain cautious and vigilant in our school zone.

To this point, I have been in contact with our local politicians, Department of Transportation, and both construction site managers to enhance our current situation. In the next few days I expect the Kunehi Street sidewalk to reopen. I am also optimistic that in the next few weeks / months we will see additional crosswalks. Finally, Senator Gabbard has shared that he will speak with the Department of Planning and Permitting in hopes to erect the stoplight sooner than the original timeline of June / July of 2024.

Hawaii Realtors Keiki Art Contest -

Our Keiki Art Contest, open to students in grades K-8, helps children learn about fair housing rights and its importance in Hawai‘i’s communities. We invite our keiki to submit an original piece of artwork expressing their thoughts about fair housing in Hawai‘i based on this year’s theme: “Building Aloha: Spreading Fair Housing Across Hawai‘i”.

PRIZES: First place winners in each category (grades K-4 and grades 5-8) will receive $250, and their artwork will be featured in a printed 2024 calendar. Second place winners in each category will receive $150. Third place winners in each category will receive $75. Honorable Mentions will also be selected. DEADLINE: October 31, 2023

Please work with our Art Teacher, Kari Zigan, if you need any assistance with this.

Congratulations to all of our incredibly talented performers who did a great job at the Talent Show!  Thank you to Laura, Student Council, PTA and everyone who donated time, goodies or support for the event.  What a great showcase of TEAMWORK in addition to all of the musicians, actors and fantastic performers!

Safety Week was a great success!  Thank you for the preparation of your students.  This year more than any other, the students were incredibly attentive, quiet and cooperative throughout the safety drills.  During the evacuation, we were able to easily make verbal adjustments (doubling up lines or staging releases) as the students were quiet and could hear instructions.

Thank you for your feedback as well.  You can view the feedback received on the slides.  We will pilot some adjustments for the November fire drill to address the lining up numerical order on the field. More information will be shared prior to that drill.

Aloha Teachers,

Please take this week to review or complete the Second STEP Bully Prevention Unit (BPU) for your grade level.  The counselors will be offering the training during our faculty time on Wednesday.

  • Please make sure you schedule in time to complete the lessons in the pacing guide.
  •  This year we will be emailing families about the BPU program and providing them with the homelinks. This communication will be sent out the first week of the lessons.
  •  We are also asking that all classrooms complete the Summative Assessment at the end of the unit.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to your grade level counselor.
