Updates for the Week of April 21, 2025

This Wednesday marks Administrative Professionals Day, and we want to take a moment to sincerely recognize and thank our exceptional office staff. Their dedication and support extend far beyond the expected, touching every corner of our school. From cheerfully greeting families – both the friendly and the more challenging – to ensuring the smooth execution of every event, our office team is truly the backbone of our school. They arrive early, stay late, manage our supplies, process our paychecks and scan our lunches, and, above all, always help to ensure the well-being of our students. Thank you for all that you do!

In addition to celebrating our administrative professionals, this week we also gratefully acknowledge the vital contributions of our campus volunteers. Our PCNC, Kilohana Motas, and our active PTA work tirelessly to create meaningful volunteer opportunities that benefit our entire school. We also extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Ramey's dedicated library volunteers and the many parents who make our field trips possible and help with safety week and other school wide events. Think about the volunteers who make a difference in your specific area – whether in your classroom, during events, or elsewhere on campus. Let them know their support is truly valued this week!

Finally, this week we also want to share heartfelt appreciation to our incredible A+ Program for their continued support of our students. After a full day of learning, our dedicated YMCA A+ staff welcome our students for an additional three hours of care and engagement!

EL Requirements (From Jennifer Gutierrez)

As most of you know, all HIDOE teachers must meet the Sheltered Instruction Qualification (SIQ) requirement. We are currently in the second year of the 3-year timeline. So far, 34 teachers at Ho'okele have completed this requirement.

There are 8 options available. Please click here for more information on SIQ

HIDOE is offering free self-paced WIDA e-workshops that can go toward option 3 or option 8. These e-workshops must be completed by August 31, 2025.

Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the SIQ requirement. If you have questions about your SIQ status, please contact the Office of Talent Management, Educator Quality Section at 808-441-8499 or hqt@k12.hi.us.

Registration for HĀ Summit 2025

Please see the notice that was shared with all DOE personnel earlier this week:

We’re excited to invite you to the upcoming HĀ Summit 2025, hosted by the Office of Hawaiian Education in partnership with Maui schools and community. This two-day event will be held June 17–18, 2025, at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College.

Open to all HIDOE staff and education stakeholders, the summit is a space to strengthen BREATH, experience and deepen our shared understanding of the Nā Hopena A‘o (HĀ) framework, and connect with a statewide network of practitioners. You’ll have the chance to learn, share and grow together.

  • Registration opens Wednesday, April 16, and closes Tuesday, May 7.

  • Space is limited – registration is first come, first served.

  • Supervisor approval is required to attend.

Visit the HĀ Summit website for more details and to register (see the “Registration” tab). The official memo will be posted on DOE Memos and Notices.

If you have any questions, please contact kaanohi.kalama-macomber@k12.hi.us. We hope to see you there!
