Updates for Week of February 6, 2023

I just wanted to send a Hihimanu HOORAY on behalf of our 5th grade basketball teams. Both girls and boys teams participated today in the Kapolei Complex 5th Grade Basketball tournament and won 7 out of their 8 scrimmages! Even more impressive than the winning record, however, was students cheering for each other and representing Ho'okele with perseverance and sportsmanship.

Shoutout to Ms. Edwards, Ms. Eveland, Ms. Pecchinenda, and Ms. Valdez for helping to make this opportunity for our 5th graders possible. And please congratulate our players (list in email from Ms. Toy) should you see them on campus next week!

WOW Wednesday #2 from Principal Toy (2/1//2023)

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Here to share some inspiration from what's happening in classrooms and also schoolwide updates.

Inspiration: If you have a chance to swing by kindergarten today, you will see amazing projects celebrating 100 days in school! Many students also dressed up as centenarians to mark the occasion so keep your eyes peeled for grey-haired wigs, canes, and suspenders.

I was in Ms. Takeguchi's 2nd grade class a few days ago where students were working in small groups to tackle word problems. They identified together what they already knew, and also isolated what they needed to figure out to then decide on their next step. I walked away with a reminder of this strong practice to address my problem solving every day as well!

Updates

  • Home Group Time Today: Please meet again today in home groups in your own areas to finalize Action Plans (if incomplete from last week) as well as continue to compile any funding requests which will be due on February 21 (notes and resources here).  As a reminder, today is an extended planning day until 3:30 PM.

  • Spring Math Camp: A free virtual math camp is being offered to students Grade 1-3 during Spring Break! More information is here, registration opens tonight if you have students in mind whose families may like to sign up for this program.

  • Good Idea Grant: Got a good idea to enrich student learning? The Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation (PSHF) challenges you to think creatively and boldly to design a project that will excite, engage, and educate your students. Requests up to $3,000 will be considered and this is open to all HIDOE teachers. See more information here.

  • TATP Reminder: The tentative school list for next school year will be posted by Friday morning next to the sign-in binder. TATP #1 posting will be from February 17 to March 3.

  • Grades 2 & 3 Counseling: With the departure of Eduardo, we are working to adjust counseling coverage for Grades 2 and 3. More updates will be forthcoming. In the meantime, Grade 2 teachers please reach out to Ms. Elizabeth Okamoto and Grade 3 teachers please reach out to Ms. Katie Yamamoto for counseling support.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I hope you're having wow-derful day,

Leslie

Social Emotional Learning

Aloha Teachers!

We have 16(teaching) weeks left of school left this year!!!  If you are following the suggested implementation schedule you should also be on Lesson 20!  Grades 1-5 only have 22 lessons in the curriculum.  The last lesson (22) will be a review and a time to give your summative assessments.  Please plan on giving the summative assessments to all of your students.
