Updates for Week of October 25, 2021
Faculty and Staff Updates
Parent-Teacher Conference Time is here!
Both teachers and parents may be nervous before conferences. If the focus remains on what is best for the child, then all should end well. Like all conversations, parent-teacher conferences are best when both sides talk and listen. Here are some tips for a successful conference:
*Be prepared and stay positive
*Focus on strengths before discussing concerns
*Don’t criticize, Don’t compare, Don’t complain
*Send home reminders with ways they can contact you: Notes, email, phone number and times available
*Greet parents with a smile
*Allow enough time to conference but stick to the points necessary to help the child.
*Be prepared and specific with work samples, attendance records, behavior notes, and
other data you want to discuss.
*Be ready for questions. You may be asked: “What is my child’s ability level? Is my
child doing their best? Does my child cause any trouble? What can I do to help my child
succeed in school? Does my child have friends at school? Does my child eat their
lunch?
*Ask about the child. What are their interests? Activities? Hobbies?
*Listen to the parents but keep the conference focused on the child, discussing solutions
and collaboration
*End on a positive note and let the parents know when and how you are available.
*Keep a record of the conference with your notes
*Follow up.
Please be sure to remind students and families about the early release schedules for conferences. For your internal planning, we will continue to have both recesses on conference days (except Wednesdays). You may decide to keep your students indoors for second recess if you would like to utilize the time for instruction; however the supervision scheduled for recess will be in place. The PE schedule has been adjusted for grades 3-5 only as grade K-2 PE is not impacted by the early release.
SUBSTITUTE PLANS: Teachers please be sure to make your lessons plans as paper/pencil work- no computers; unless you have made those arrangements with your sub.
Recess Games/Safety: Teachers, with the K-Drama “Squid Games” gaining popularity, you have noticed an increase in your students playing the game “Red Light, Green Light” in a violent manner (basically they are pretending to shoot the ones who are ‘out’). It was told to our grades 3-5 earlier to play this game appropriately, however it was brought to my attention that our younger students are also playing this in the same way. Please speak to your students about playing ALL RECESS GAMES IN SCHOOL appropriately. This means being safe, not PRETENDING or BEING violent in any way.
Just for Fun: Click on this link to my padlet to answer this quick Ho‘okele Staff SEL Check-in question (What picture on your phone best reflects how you are feeling right now?): https://padlet.com/melinda_pamatigan/Bookmarks. Keep it school appropriate :)

SAFETY FIRST-RECESS REMINDERS: ALL RECESS GAMES IN SCHOOL must be played appropriately. This means being safe. PRETENDING to be violent or acting violent is not appropriate. We want everyone to be safe so all can enjoy recess time activities.
Please be aware of our cell phone policy in the parent handbook.
Cell Phone Policy
We recognize that cell phones have become a common tool for communication. However, they have also become a major distraction to the learning environment and are vulnerable to theft. We ask that you allow your child to carry a cell phone only if absolutely necessary. A child who brings a cell phone to school is responsible for their own property.
Students are allowed to carry cell phones to school. However, phones must be turned off and stored out of sight during school hours. Phones may not be used to talk, take pictures, play games, record or text while on school campus, including before school, after school, on the bus and at recesses.
Students who do not follow this policy will be asked to put their cell phones away. A student who refuses to put away their phone or continues to use the phone inappropriately or at inappropriate times may be referred to the office for insubordination.
Have a great week and be sure to have plans for our early release pick up days, starting on TUESDAY!
