Updates for Week of August 10, 2015

Hi Everyone,

Please complete and turn in your acknowledgement forms for your Opening School Year packet and required videos by Friday.

Your emergency bags and plans will be distributed this week.  Thank you for your patience and your problem solving to get assistance to your classrooms.  Your bag will contain emergency red cards, however phone is usually the fastest way to get help quickly.

Thank you for your quick adjustments for rainy day recess last week.  We should now have access to the courts which will help provide an alternative for us.  An indoor recess may still be called, however if students are outside when it starts to rain or if the fields are wet, we may use the court to keep them outside for recess.

Starting this week, we will have some structured activities in Laulima (line walks, walking laps, etc.) until we get our recess equipment and can set areas for various activities such as basketball, jump ropes, hula hoops, and quiet reading or other activities.  Students should not bring in their own toys, cards or games.

Thank you to Jill for her work on the yard duty schedule.  Please check your email for the updates.  We appreciate you taking time to review it and also to those volunteering extra blocks.

Reminders:
1.  Bring out your Yard Duty Pouch---sharpen the pencil!!  Add in some gotcha tickets!!
2.  Review Procedures for Students and  Teachers: Staff Portal > Staff Handbook > Recess & Yard Duty section.
3.  Be visible, roam all around your assigned area.  Kids still need a lot of help learning rules.
4.  Until we have more adult supervisors, if you have lunch yard duty, please pick up students at the cafe at the start of the recess block.

From Liane:
Our Astronomers in the Classroom assembly is confirmed.  Dr. Jeffrey Bennett, astronomer and author, will be visiting Ho‘okele on Wednesday, August 12th from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Students will be sitting on the floor and I’ll be forwarding a seating chart soon.  News people may be attending the event so please be prepared.  I requested that student faces not be filmed and am working on special permission forms for student photos.  I'm limiting media photos to Kari and Kaulu's class because they were first to respond to the opportunity.
Dr. Bennett will have a Q & A session after his presentation and is asking classroom teachers to select students to participate.  Here's a tentative assembly schedule:

Student Announcements (Please read to your students)

Aloha Students!  We hope you are enjoying your new school.  We are impressed by how quickly you have learned the routines.  Great job!

Please help show respect for our school by taking care of your area in the cafeteria.  Last week there were way too many items left behind or not picked up off of the floor.  If you drop your napkin or fork, pick it up and throw it away. If you drop food, help by cleaning it up or letting someone know you need help.

This week we will be able to utilize our Laulima area (the covered play court).  We will have some set activities for you once our equipment is available, such as jump ropes, hula hoops and ball playing.  For now, limited activities in the playcourt will be laps around the courts following the lines and quiet activities or reading.  Please leave all toys and personal items (cards, games) at home.

Because Ho‘okele CARES!
Have a great week,
Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Pamatigan

If you have an event that you would like added to the Faculty and Staff Bulletin, please submit this request form 1-2 weeks prior: Bulletin Announcement Request
