Updates for the Week of February 9, 2026

This week is shaping up to be a total zoo! Between our Madagascar Jr. performers taking the stage and the arrival of furry friends for the Preschool Petting Zoo and Principal Rankie and VP Miyashiro out for the week- the "animals" are officially running the show!

Beyond the chaos, we’re balancing a heavy dose of heart and hard work. We’ll be honoring Union Institute Days, hosting our Grade 3 Parent Activity, and spreading the love for Valentine’s Day. Amidst all the excitement, we haven't forgotten the practical side of things—we’ll be closely checking in on storm damage to make sure our "habitat" is safe and sound for everyone.

It’s going to be a loud, busy, and wonderful week!!

⛈️Storm Update:

UPDATE 2/8/2026 2:50 pm

There will be no school for Oʻahu students on Friday, February 13. Students will not report to campus, and there will be no in-person instruction that day.

This schedule adjustment is the result of the statewide school closure on Monday, February 9, due to severe weather. Monday had previously been scheduled as a teacher institute (waiver) day for Oʻahu schools, with no students on campus. The Department of Education has rescheduled that institute day to Friday, February 13.

All HIDOE schools and offices closed Monday, Feb. 9

Following Gov. Josh Green’s announcement Sunday regarding severe weather conditions impacting the state, and in alignment with his directive, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education will implement the closure of all public schools and HIDOE offices statewide on Monday, Feb. 9, due to current storm conditions.

Applicability

  • This closure applies to all HIDOE public schools as well as state, district and complex area offices.
  • This direction applies only to the conditions associated with the current severe weather event and does not establish a standing practice for future closures.
  • All employees are excused from reporting to worksites tomorrow unless specifically notified by their supervisor.

Students and families

  • There will be no in-person instruction on Monday, Feb. 9.

Additional updates

  • The Department will continue to monitor conditions in coordination with state and emergency management officials.
  • Information regarding reopening or additional closures will be communicated through official channels as soon as it becomes available.

Please prioritize your safety and continue to follow guidance from local and state emergency officials.

UPDATE for EO and EA Institute Days

  • Aloha EOs and EAs, the Institute Day conference events are cancelled following the state Department of Education's decision to close public schools and offices due to dangerous weather conditions.

UPDATE for HSTA Institute Day

HSTA- will be rescheduling Teacher Institute Day for FRIDAY 2/13/2026. No School for Students on Friday.

As we prepare this week to see the Grand Opening of Madagascar Jr., we want to thank the amazingly talented Staff and Support Crew that volunteer their time, energy and talent to put this all together.  Director Laura Brown has assembled a team that is truly remarkable and we are always inspired by the end results of what our students can accomplish when led by such fantastic mentors. We were able to catch a preview on Friday and know you will not be disappointed!

We are very excited to see how it all comes together this week for the performances.  Mahalo for all of the hard work to our Director and Choreographer Laura and Melissa Brown; and Assistants to the Director Jill Higa, Ashley Shinn, Crystal Alejandro, Candice Yamamoto, Marissa Carlos, and Michell Sanchez.

Additionally, we have many staff and family members running the lighting, hair and makeup, bake sale, tickets and of course dealing with and cleaning up the lovely mess!

With so many to thank, our full list of appreciations will be shared after the show!  If you have never attended one of our musicals-don’t miss out on another one!  See you there!

This year we are fortunate to have 2 free programs from the Hawaii Keiki Dental program.  Kindergarteners will be receiving a free dental assessment and Grade 2 students will receive a free Dental screening and Sealant.  These programs will be on March 6.  Teachers in grades K and 2, please help promote these programs by reminding families and sending home the forms.

Grade 2 students must have a consent form to Opt-IN.

Kindergarteners will participate unless they Opt-OUT.

Thank you Sherri and Carli for helping coordinate this for our students!

Don’t see your birthday?  Did you fill out this form?  This is the Personnel Data form that helps us keep information that only the office and admin use for emergencies (and to acknowledge birthdays).  If you do not wish us to acknowledge your birthday, please let us know and we will not share, however we do ask that all staff members complete the form so we can have your emergency contacts and vehicle information.

Thank you!
