Updates for Week of July 27, 2020 (Updated!)

Updates for Faculty and Staff
We have been fortunate once again that Hurricane Douglas decided to take another route away from our islands.  We hope you all were prepared and ready.  There will always be a next storm and we will always be better prepared.  We also experienced the possibility of our school being used as a shelter, so hopefully in the event that ever does happen, we will have much more information on what to expect and the impact of that on our school.

Linked you will find what has been shared with our families regarding the reopening of school.  There is much information in that document.  We are currently using the parent handbook as the basis of our faculty handbook which will provide more of the operational details for you.  The Faculty handbook will be shared with you as soon as possibleParent and Student Reopening Handbook
Please refer to last week’s blog for information for the opening of school.  At this point, we do not have any revisions.  There is a Board of Education Meeting on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 1:00 pm.  The agenda indicates the Board will take action on revisions to DOE’s 2020-2021 School calendar:
*to allow additional training and professional development days for teachers and staff at the beginning of the school year; and
*delaying student’s first day to ensure health and safety preparedness for all public schools.
Board action is also listed on the agenda for a waiver for the 180 day school year and expectations on training and PD, starting school in distance learning mode, mandating masks and detailed written, publicly posted guidance from DOH.
HGEA, HSTA and UPW are having conversations regarding students’ first day of instruction.

Stay tuned for updates, but just as we prepared for Hurricane Douglas, Ho‘okele will plan to be ready whatever the outcome of that BOE meeting.

Regarding format and delivery of teacher PD sessions this week, we will be in various locations (B101, Cafe, Library, Computer Lab) following social distancing guidelines.  If you are not attending the PD session in person (on Wednesday OR Thursday), you are still required to attend the meeting virtually and MUST be on campus. Please email admin and cc me by 10:00 AM tomorrow morning 7/28. if you are attending virtually. Please note for some of these sessions (Google Meet and iPad/Doc Cam screen recording), you will be missing pieces of the PD if things need to be set up externally (outside of what's viewable) in a Google Meet session. We can later send you links to instructions.  Please refer to Jill’s email (7/27/2020) for more details.  Agenda and Breakout session Information.

We look forward to meeting with you this week!  Enjoy the last few days of your vacation!

Take care and stay safe!
