Updates for Week of January 16, 2017
Information for Faculty
Hope your new year is going smoothly and you enjoy a restful 3 day weekend!
During interim testing, the resource schedule for grades 3-5 has been adjusted for your grade level’s resource day. Please see the changes HERE. Check Jared’s email (from Friday) for information regarding the interim testing schedule. For lower grades, please be aware of the schedule for testing to provide an ideal testing environment for upper grade students.
Please read the student section below for changes to recess. Please remember to roam your areas during yard duty and if students are playing more in another area, please adjust your supervision accordingly. Adults should not be stationary in one location when on yard duty and should scan areas around you at all times!!
Thank you for all of your flexibility and dedication to our students! Have a great week!

Information for Students
We had a pretty good week coming back to school after the break. Please remember to follow your Tribes expectations at all times by showing mutual respect, appreciations, attentive listening, right to pass and participate and safety first in ALL of your interactions ALL across campus. Hihimanu Glide with hands by your side! We should never see students running from the cafeteria to the recess area after lunch. This is one area we all need to work on doing better.
Please do your best on our interim testing for the next 2 weeks for grades 3-5. This is important for you to learn what to expect on the SBA tests in May. This information is also useful for your teachers-so DO YOUR BEST!
Here are some changes, reminders and updates for recess for this quarter:
Remember to wait for an adult before you start to play in an area.
Sports area: Catch and Throw. You must stay in the sports area with the blue and red catchers and wiffle balls. Do not go out by the fence area or past the hills areas. Be careful when throwing the balls to make sure the person you are playing with is paying attention.
Hills: Students may run in the hills area and alongside E building. Tetherball has been added as an activity in this area.
Do not run through an area where someone is playing tetherball or catch. There is also no running by the recess equipment. Chase and tag is not permitted.
Here are the tetherball rules we will be following:
Tetherball Rules
- Play: One player, who serves first, is selected.
- One player stands on opposite sides of pole.
- The server starts the game by hitting the ball out of his/her hand.
- The opponent must try to hit the ball in the opposite direction.
- As the ball travels, each player tries to hit it in an effort to wind the ball around the pole in their direction.
- The player who first winds the ball completely abound the pole wins the game.
- During the game each player must remain in his/her own playing zone.
Fouls for the game include:
1. Hitting the ball with any part of the body other than the hands or forearms.
2. Stopping continuous play by holding or catching the ball.
3. Touching the pole with any part of the hand.
4. Interfering with progress of the game by hitting the rope with arms or hand.
5. Playing the ball while standing outside of the playing zone.
6. Throwing the ball.
7. Hanging or pulling on the ball.
Scoring - The game is won by the player who first winds the rope completely around the pole or by forfeit because of fouls committed by his/her opponent.
Penalty - A player who commits any of the fouls listed above forfeits the game to his/her opponent.
Play stops immediately after 2 fouls have been committed. (1 warning allowed)
Other rules – The next person waiting is the “judge” and decides all close plays.
After a game ends by a win or by fouls, the next 2 players in line will play. (Winner does not stay).
Hula hoops and jump ropes will still be available for play.
When an adult is present and there is no PE, the court areas may be opened for play. You may use only the equipment put out for you-do NOT get additional equipment from the storage room.
Remember to return items to where you find them. If you help put away equipment after recess, you must do so safely. NEVER climb on the tetherball poles or carts. NO STUDENTS will move the tetherball poles-adults will do this!
We hope you have fun with the new activities and take care of equipment and games provided. If it is not taken care of, it will be removed from play and you will lose the activity. From time to time you may see some additional activities that we will try out. Have fun and be safe!
Have a great week!
