Information for Students:
This week is safety week. The drills that we do this week are meant to help you stay safe at school in a variety of situations that could occur. It is important to note that these are not field trips, games or “fun” activities-drills are to be taken seriously so that everyone knows how to respond in an actual situation.
A lockdown is implemented whenever there is a dangerous situation on campus that requires everyone to stay safe inside buildings and classrooms. When you hear a lockdown announcement, get to the nearest classroom as quickly as possible-even if it is not your homeroom. You will stay in the classroom until an all clear is given.
Shelter-in-Place occurs when there are dangerous chemicals or fumes outside. It is similar to a lockdown and we will practice both of these drills on Tuesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, we will have our monthly fire drill, but instead of going back to class, we will evacuate the school to the high school. We practice this drill in the case of a situation where our campus is determined unsafe. Again-you must walk quickly and quietly along with your class. Keep up with your line. Older students will walk and partner with younger students as you go out of the gates (it doesn’t matter who you are with, just help the younger students to keep moving!)
Our last drill this week will be an earthquake drill on Thursday morning.
Additionally, this week grade 4 will be learning about bike safety and on Friday grades PreK through 3rd grade will learn about fire safety.
Be attentive and follow all instructions given by adults during these drills. What you learn this week is important for your safety in and out of school!
Thank you for participating in our new recess activities. Here are some things you can try this quarter:
Red Light/Green Light (play along E building grassy area):
In this game, one person plays the "stop light" and the rest try to touch him/her.
At the start, all the children form a line about 15 feet away from the stop light.
The stop light faces away from the line of kids and says "green light". At this point the kids are allowed to move towards the stoplight.
At any point, the stop light may say "red light!" and turn around. If any of the kids are caught moving after this has occurred, they are out.
Play resumes when the stop light turns back around and says "green light".
The stop light wins if all the kids are out before anyone is able to touch his/her hand.
Otherwise, the first player to touch the stop light wins the game and earns the right to be "stop light" for the next game.
Racing around the Track (Turkey Trot Prep)
On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays-the PTTs will give you cards to keep track of your laps. The course is about 1/10 of a mile, so if you run 10 laps-you have run 1 mile! Let’s get into shape! Many of you were tired after just 1 lap!!
Spot Relays
Around the sunflower circle area are spots that you can use as a path (hop like a frog to lilypads). Students can also organize relays using the spots and 2 teams-each team member stands on a spot and you have to move your spots in order for the team to move ahead. Be creative!
Have FUN and Be safe!
