Updates for Week of October 17, 2022

ALOHA!

From Principal Rankie (email 10/14/2022):

2021 - 2022 Data:

There have been several data releases this month that capture our progress from both this year and last year. We will analyze much of this in our upcoming meetings, but please take a minute to review the attached documents and reflect on all of your hard work. Great Job!!!

Halloween Parade:

As you are aware, we are bringing back our student led Halloween Parade on October 31. We have looked into ways to open this event up to our families, however at this time we do not logistically believe we have a viable option. We will continue to hold this as a student event and prioritize their ability to see each other's costumes. We will revisit this in the future in the event we can open it up to our families.

As a reminder, we will have a Trunk-or-Treat Community event the previous week on Friday, October 28 where students can celebrate with their families on campus. Please remind your families of this opportunity if asked if they are requesting to participate in the student parade.

Kapolei High School Homecoming Parade:

Thank you to everyone who participated in the parade or was cheering our students on along the way. Our Dance Team and JPOs did a great job at representing our school and enthusiastically cheered on their high school peers. Take a look at our social media accounts @Hookele808 or our YouTube to see more.

It’s Conference Time!  Here are a few reminders from our PTC packet:

As you begin to prepare for the upcoming parent conferences, here are just

a few suggestions for communicating with parents.

-Make parents feel comfortable. Build on what parents know; what they're feeling; what they're thinking (about their child). You don't want them to

feel inferior or uninformed. Involve them and make them feel important and needed.

-Be positive. No matter how difficult the child is and no matter how serious the problems are, always find positive things to say. Parents want to hear something good, even though their child may be struggling. It gives them the strength to deal with whatever needs help.

-Be careful how you phrase negative information. Think about and plan how you will share your concerns with parents. You want and need their assistance in working with their child.

-Be sensitive to parents' problems. Oftentimes, teachers have no idea of the horrendous situation that some of the parents may be facing. Try to learn as much as you can about a child's family life. You can't help much, but you can be empathetic when communicating with the parents.

-Know the child as a person. Indicate to parents that you know--or are getting to know--their child as a person, not just as a student. Don't make the child's academic progress the sole focus of the conference. Parents always ask themselves, "Does this teacher really know my child?"

We know how important it is to get parental support and involvement--from simple things like checking homework books and signing forms and papers, to more serious situations, Iike following through with support for academic or behavioral concerns. That positive relationship you have with your parents will go a long way should you need their assistance in helping with their child.

Just remember: "We are a community of lifelong learners committed to growing in mind, heart, body and spirit."

Please note the adjusted time for your PLCs and Resource Days.  The last rotation will be the one that ends before 1:00 pm.  If your last rotation ends close to 1:00 pm, please plan accordingly for dismissal.
