Updates for the Week of January 19, 2026

When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Hawaii in February 1964, he spoke to over 10,000 people at the University of Hawaii’s Andrews Outdoor Theatre.  During his visit, he famously praised Hawaii as a model for the rest of the world. He said:

"We look to you for inspiration... as you provide a noble example of how people of different races and backgrounds can live together in harmony."

According to Gemini, I also learned how MLK day in Hawai‘i is considered a day “on” and not a day “off” as many use it as a day of service for ‘āina-based learning, such as beach clean-ups and other community projects.

What a great inspiration for the week and even some connections to the upcoming broadcast about sharing a sense of Hawai‘i, the Aloha Spirit and Mālama.

We hope you have a nice 3 day weekend, however you spend your day “on” or “off” and look forward to what your students have learned or will learn about the inspirational leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It’s that time of year again!

Catch all of the information and last minute reminders from Ashley Shinn’s Email (1/16/26)...

Our first session is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20 from 8:15 AM

Before Testing

  • Log in to the www.alohahsap.org website before school to ensure you're able to get in smoothly.

  • Have students clear their desks and use the restroom BEFORE the session starts to minimize distractions in the hallways.

    • Water Bottles, backpacks, and any stray classwork papers should be kept away from students (e.g. water bottles on the sink counter in the back of the room or on an outside table).

  • Students who are assigned to test in a SMALL GROUP should have all their materials ready to go by 8:10 AM.

    • Test Administrators - Please pick up your students in their grade level hubs.

    • See SBA Interim Schedule for TA & class assignments.

  • Be sure to set the tone by sharing your expectations and the purpose of this assessment before the test session starts, so all students are clear about the procedures (e.g. testing environment, restroom, questions, early finishers).

  • Read the test administration script daily.

  • Log your Test Session ID once all students are logged in.

During Testing

  • Actively monitor/walk around the classroom during the assessment to be sure students are following test security guidelines

  • If you need support during the session, flag down the proctors that are stationed in your hubs.

  • If you need to contact any of the Test Coordinators (Katie/Ashley) or Tech Coordinator (Jill), please email, Google Chat, or call using the classroom phone. Cell phones are not allowed to be out in the testing environment.

After Testing

  • Shred any scratch paper from today's session.

  • Keep all log in cards and envelopes in a secured, locked cabinet/file.

  • Charge your iPads

We are looking forward to a smooth interim testing season! Katie and I will be roaming the halls throughout the session in case support is needed. Please let us know if you have any questions prior to Tuesday! Have a wonderful weekend!

Just a reminder to take and or upload photos for yearbook. Please take a look at the Yearbook Photo Instructions for Teachers.  I need all teachers to upload 6 candids for our yearbook by March 6, 2026.

We're also going to try to create a Buddy page in the yearbook this year IF we get photos from all classes, so be sure to include Buddy photos here.

Thank you!
